Mother’s Day might be over, but we’re celebrating NOLA mamas all month long!

Lauren Darnell (Son of Saint) and Tenzin (3 years old)

As the Director of Partnerships & Programming for one of our favorite organizations, Son of a Saint, NOLA mom Lauren Darnell is not only busy making sure the Son of Saint boys are taken care, she’s also busy raising one -- her three-year-old son Tenzin! And Lauren is loving it…especially doing it in the city she also loves!

“A New Orleans Mother is adaptable and amazing,” Lauren mused. “She explores and exposes her children to all the sensorial experiences New Orleans has to offer -- art, culture, people, music, and food. A New Orleans mom goes with the flow and can traverse any scene, from an outdoor movie to riding a carousel to a party at the New Orleans Museum of Art to miniature golf to live music to street car rides to the lazy river at the Zoo. New Orleans moms get that not a lot is needed for a great time; the city is our playground!”

Father’s Day is quickly approaching (that’s right, this Sunday, June 15!). And to celebrate such a special day, we’re featuring a different first time NOLA daddy each day this week!

Sonny and Tenzin Sonny Lee, 2.5 months

Every time we see Bivian ‘Sonny’ Lee III, he’s usually got a kangol on his head, a permanent smile on his face, and is ready to talk about his fantastic nonprofit organization, Son of a Saint. A son of a saint himself (Sonny’s father, Bivian Lee Jr., was a former Saints player who passed away when Sonny was three years old), Sonny and his two and a half month old son, Tenzin, will be celebrating their first Father’s Day together!

Next Saturday, New Orleans will be transformed into an obstacle course that only the bravest and most intelligent New Orleanians will be able to conquer.

It’s a challenge. But not just any challenge. It's an Amazing Challenge, traversing through the streets of metro New Orleans. Hosted by local nonprofit Son of a Saint and open to boys and girls (8-14 years old), the Amazing Challenge is a “challenging and educational competition highlighting the Son of a Saint mission of enhancing the lives of young males and promoting mentorship.”

Every time we see Mr. Bivian ‘Sonny’ Lee, III, he’s usually got a kangol on his head, a permanent smile on face, and a young New Orleans boy by his side looking at him with admiration and respect…one of ‘my kids’ he affectionately refers to them. In fact, one Sonny is certainly young (y’all know thirty is the new twenty), he’s got plenty of ‘kids’ that he’s supporting and guiding through this whirlwind of living in New Orleans.

It was over two years ago that Sonny began his quest of working with young, fatherless, New Orleans males through his non-profit organization, Son of a Saint. Sonny, a true son of a Saint, remembers his time growing up without his own father, Bivian ‘Sonny’ Lee, Jr., a former New Orleans Saints player who passed away at the young age of 36 when Sonny was only three years old. He remembers suffering from a lack of confidence and searching for validation and he wants to help as many fatherless males as he can, providing them with support and encouragement to show them the power they hold and how to harness it to be successful.
