Springtime IntheNOLA with Kenny Lopez: Magic, crawfish, and bead trees!

Written by  IntheNOLA.com
Earlier this week, Dr. Ansel Augustine of the Office of Black Catholic Ministries gave us the lowdown on his favorite springtime NOLA things!

Now, it’s time for Kenny Lopez, reporter for WGNO-TV’s “News with a Twist,” to explain exactly what #SpringtimeIntheNOLA means to him!
“Springtime in New Orleans always gets me to hum ‘It’s a Wonderful World’ by Louis Armstrong,” smiled Kenny. “It represents a fresh start, a new beginning. From the moment the Japanese magnolias and Mardi Gras trees ‘bloom’ to the smell of spicy crawfish boiling to the cool breeze through the giant magnolia trees, there’s a sense of renewal that just comes over me!”

He added, “Describing spring in New Orleans to someone who’s not from here…I’d simply say that there’s no place I’d rather be. I moved to New Orleans in the spring, so it’s definitely the season that is dearest to me. I like how you can walk outside and not sweat all day long like you do in the summer. Springtime makes you feel like you’re listening to your favorite song on repeat. It’s the perfect season to sit on your porch and drink a nice, cool Abita Strawberry beer!”

Here are some of Kenny’s favorites in the spring:

Favorite Festival
Kenny: I absolutely LOVE French Quarter Fest and Jazz Fest! My favorite foods to chow down on at French Quarter Fest are the crawfish crepes from Muriel’s Jackson Square and the shrimp and alligator sausage cheesecake from Jacques-Imo’s Café. As for Jazz Fest, the food that flies my taste buds to the moon are the crawfish enchiladas, crawfish bread, and the soft-shell crab po-boy!

Favorite Musicians/Bands
Kenny: I’m a HUGE music lover, so you have to bear with me on this one! Their beats, lyrics, rhythm, notes, etc. have all touched me along my New Orleans journey. I’m so thankful for their incredible gift they share with so many!

So here goes in no particular order: Robin Barnes, Amanda Shaw, Anais St. John, Rebirth Brass Band, The Bayou Saints, Denisia, Higher Heights, New Thousand, Better Than Ezra, One Love Brass Band, Tank and the Bangas, Flow Tribe, Amanda Ducorbier, Maggie Koerner, Galactic, Travers Geoffray, The Breton Sound, The Little Things, Royal Teeth, T-Ray the Violinist, Anders Osborne, The Vettes, Jon Cleary, Dr. John, Kermit Ruffins, Cristina Perez, Irma Thomas, The Swamp Donkeys, Lost Bayou Ramblers, Carolyn Broussard, Water Seed, John Boutte, Baby Bee, Treme Brass Band, The Soul Rebels, Stooges Brass Band, George Porter, Tonya Boyd Cannon, Trombone Shorty, Free Agents Brass Band, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Tanya & Dorise, Jeremy Davenport, Harry Connick Jr., Mia Borders, Margie Perez, Meschiya Lake, Honey Island Swamp Band, The Meters, Rockin’ Dopsie, PJ Morton, So Long Storyland, Quiana Lynell, Irvin Mayfield, Charmaine Neville, Chris Owens and Grandpa Elliott Small!

I know...it looks like the Jazz Fest cubes!

Favorite Snowball
Kenny: My two go-tos are Hansen’s Sno-Bliz and SnoWizard. When I first moved here, my dear friend Betsy took me for my very first snowball at SnoWizard. I’d walk there because it was close to my house. Cherry with condensed milk is my fave; it tastes exactly like cherry pie a la mode! At Hansen’s, I usually order the cream of blueberry or cream of nectar snowball; they’re so very refreshing and satisfying!

Favorite Po-Boy
Kenny: I have two go-to po-boy shops as well. I’m loyal to Parasol’s and their firecracker shrimp po-boy. I used to live across the street from them and whenever I didn’t want to cook dinner, I’d just walk across the street to get one! I’m also a huge fan of the roast beef po-boy at Parkway Bakery & Tavern. So filling and flavorful!

Favorite Happy Hour
Kenny: My favorite happy hour is Commander’s Palace. I mean, 25-cent martinis! How can you possibly beat that?! I bring a roll of quarters and buy everyone a round!

Favorite Place to Get Boiled Crawfish
Kenny: Backyard crawfish boils are my favorite! There’s something pretty amazing about everyone gathering around a table, breaking crawfish together. It’s a real family-like feeling!

Lil’ Lagniappe
Kenny: I constantly tell people, “You don’t choose New Orleans, New Orleans chooses you!” I feel eternally blessed that NOLA chose me, embraces me daily, and won’t let me go, whether it be summer, fall, winter or SPRING!
