‘FUHWE,’ a mobile app and travel website, invites visitors to ‘explore like a local’

Written by
For those who are #BornRaisedStillHere and #CameLovedStayedHere, when you live in a city as dynamic, vibrant, historical, and awesome as New Orleans, it can be hard to remember that this city is indeed dynamic, vibrant, historical, and awesome.
You might go get you a fried shrimp po-boy from Parkway or have a drink on Friday night at Victory Bar or stroll around Big Lake in City Park on Sundays or get ice cream from Creole Creamery or enjoy a second line now and again. So what if you played host for others, both locals and tourists, to do some of your favorite things in New Orleans?
“A city is a sum of its residents, which means that everyone has something to offer its visitors” is one of the quotes that you’ll find from FUHWE (pronounced fa-wee), a mobile app and travel website that “connects explorers and locals in New Orleans to create unique, memorable experiences that contribute to the sustainability of the city.” In other words, FUHWE allows visitors to explore New Orleans from a local’s point of view with their own local.

We all know what it feels like to visit a new city for the first time and spend hours googling “things to do in XXX.” With FUWHE, however, some of that guesswork and search time can be reduced. Founded by Patricia Maher and Shawn Louis, both citizens of Grenada in the Carribbean, FUHWE (meaning for us) allows users to choose between several different categories or experiences, including Art, Culture, History, Food/Beverage, Music, Entertainment, and Sports, all led by locals. “FUHWE not only wants to create authentic, safe, local experiences, but also to contribute to the sustainability of New Orleans,” explained Patricia. “By enlisting locals to create unique experiences that utilize their passions, interests, and knowledge, money will stay closer to home.”
For FUHWE, taking “explorers” beyond the French Quarter and Bourbon St. is important. “There’s so much more to New Orleans than Bourbon St. and beads, and every local knows that!” smiled Patricia. Local hosts design and come up with all the details of their experiences. For example, host Dedra S. offers the American Sector and Art and Architecture experience; host Frank E. offers the French Quarter Writers Walk experience; host JoAnn B. offers the Central City “O.C. Haley Blvd. Stroll” 1 experience; and host Sidney S. offers the Uptown Zydeco & Cajun Night experience; and there are many more to choose from.
For host Dedra S., it’s been a pleasure for her to create her own experiences as opposed to following those of a tour company. “A tour company is going to have its own ideas of what they would like. So having the freedom to design my own experience and present what I feel, know, and am passionate about is great. It’s a great way to be able to express myself.”

Now, remember…just because you might be from New Orleans or you might have lived here for a long time, don’t think that you can’t partake in one of the experiences. Choose one of the categories that interest you most and meet up with others with those same interests. Explore a part of the city you haven’t spent much time in and make some friends while you’re at it.
Patricia concluded, “When we came to New Orleans, it instantly felt like home, and we knew it was the right city to launch FUHWE. It’s no wonder many say New Orleans is the ‘northernmost Caribbean city’. The palpable hospitality is what’s going to drive FUHWE.”
