Not too long ago, we featured some of our favorite movin’ and shakin’ NOLA mamas for Mother’s Day. And now with Father’s Day on the horizon (June 19!), it’s time to feature those awesome NOLA dads out there!
Geovanni Velasquez and son Geovanni (10 years old)

You’re sure to have seen the work of Geovanni Velasquez and his company Black and Geauxld Photography. From the animals of Audubon Zoo to the fashions of Fashion Week New Orleans to the music of Amanda Shaw and Robin Barnes, Geovanni’s camera goes everywhere with him. His other clients include Winn-Dixie, artist Terrance Osborne, and New Orleans Saints player Thomas Morstead, among many, many others!

In addition to his love of photography, Geovanni also loves fatherhood and is dad to 10-year-old Geovanni (aka Lowercase G.). Adopted when he was 9-months-old, Lowercase G. also has a love of photography and he’s had his own camera since the age of seven! “Lowercase G. is also a foodie and tech guy,” according to Geovanni. “What makes me smile when I think of him is how much he loves my wife. He gets so excited when she comes home in the afternoons.”

In 2013, Geovanni and his wife anxiously awaited the birth of their baby daughter they fittingly named ‘Nola.’ Sadly, baby Nola was born too early, and she passed away soon after being born. “The grieving period after losing a child is different for everyone,” Geovanni said. “We laugh and cry when we think about her. After Nola passed away, I actually avoided baby girls for a while, but we often talk about her. There’s no way to rush the healing.”

Geovanni continued, “Before we had Lowercase G., we had spoken about adopting a child after a few years of trying, but not being able to get pregnant,” he explained. “Lowercase G. came to us from my wife’s side of the family and he’s for sure been a blessing to us. People should definitely keep adoption in mind. You can always bless a child and give him or her a chance. We’ve talked about adopting more children since losing Nola, but we also want to try again for another baby.”

As a New Orleans father, Geovanni is always “showing Lowercase G. all the culture and beauty of the city. There’s so much: the steamboats, the Zoo, Aquarium, art galleries, going to see artists blow glass because we live in a city where we can do that, etc. Since he was 2-years-old, I’ve taught Lowercase G. to be the best. I’ve taught him that he can be anything in this city and this country. Our motto is: ‘Do your best or get out of the way.’”

For new fathers, Geovanni offered this: “You don’t have to know everything. It’s OK to make mistakes, but be honest with your kids. Spend time alone with them and enjoy them. You will spend a ton of time correcting and teaching them, but make sure to enjoy the goofy moments too.”

Here are some of Geovanni’s favorites:

Favorite Snowball Stand
Geovanni: Sonny’s in Kenner.

Favorite Restaurant
Geovanni: My favorite spots are Phil’s Grill and Salu.

Favorite Places To Go
Geovanni: We actually like the simple things: City Putt at City Park, street car rides, and we often just ride around looking at the New Orleans houses in different neighborhoods.

Other Favorite Things to Do
Geovanni: Sometimes I take my camera around and just shoot things. I tend to see New Orleans differently than everyone else does, so I photograph different things, such as street signs, streets in City Park, beads in trees, etc.
