Springtime IntheNOLA with Danielle Morris: Festivals, fanny packs, and more festivals!

Written by
Aside from Mardi Gras, spring has got to be the favorite season for New Orleanians. The weather’s kind of perfect, there are festivals galore, and it just feels damn good.
So what’s a New Orleanian to do with all this? Enjoy, of course!
For third grade teacher Danielle Morris, “Spring represents a new birth, like an awakening in the city,” she smiled. “Spirits roam freely, people seem their happiest, and the vibration of the city is at its peak. I find that people are just ready to mix and mingle and soak up some good ol’ vitamin D after the inconsistent temperatures of our NOLA winter months. The shift in the weather just seems to bring out the best in people.”
She continued, “In the spring, you’re bound to find me out in nature more than ever; that could mean a festival, museum hopping, or somewhere in City Park either working out, laid out with a book, or finding some balance through meditation and yoga.  City Park’s tulip garden is a short-lived attraction, but pretty amazing to see. There's so much beauty in nature. I highly recommend it.”
Here are some of Danielle’s favorites in the spring:
Favorite Festival
Danielle: My favorite festival is the French Quarter Festival. I transitioned into a vegan diet towards the end of last festival season, so I’ll have to keep you posted on the best vegan festival eats. However, I’m pretty sure the shrimp bread at the Jazz Fest can bring about world peace; it’s so ridiculously good!
Favorite Musicians/Bands to See
Danielle: I’m a neo-soul, jazz, hip-hop kind of girl, so I always look forward to the super lounges at Essence Fest. They tend to feature some of my favorite underground artists like Eric Roberson, Robert Glasper, and Esperanza Spalding. I am definitely excited about Maxwell and Digable Planets this year though.
Favorite Snowball
Danielle: Hansen’s Sno-Bliz is it for me! They have the most exotic flavors. I love the coconut milk with strawberries, lavender honey, or Thai basil flavors. Their ice is like clouds in your mouth. They make their syrups in-house and use fresh fruit and herbs to make their flavors. The syrup creations are just more natural, which maintains the integrity of the flavors minus the stabilizers and extra gunk that can make you want to down a jug of water afterwards. You might pay a little more for a snowball there, but it’s well worth it.

Favorite Po-Boy
Danielle: I’ve been vegan since September of last year, so my taste buds have changed a lot, but I don’t feel like I’m missing a thing. The energy alone of the city is enough to make up for the food that some may say I’m missing out on. The closest thing to a po-boy for me would probably be Kebab on St. Claude. It’s not your traditional po-boy, but when I’m looking for an overly stuffed sandwich on some good bread, that’s where I'd go. It’s loaded with falafel, beets, onions, and all the greens your heart desires. They are very vegan friendly. I’ve also recently tried the eggplant po-boy at Seed on Prytania and it is out of this world.
Favorite Happy Hour
Danielle: I go to happy hour more so for the prices than the social scene!  My favorite happy hour spot is Del Fuego on Magazine. I get the vegan cactus burrito, the salsa trio, and the margaritas. They tend to make my smile a little bit bigger!
Favorite Place to Get Boiled Crawfish
Danielle: Although I don’t eat them anymore, Read Seafood is hands down the place to go!
