Local Valentine’s Day gifts: ‘Shae Shea,’ handmade soap, candles, lotions, and more

Written by  IntheNOLA.com
Even though Mardi Gras is just around the crazy corner, Valentine’s Day is right behind it! If you’re looking for something to give your loved one on that special day (or any day for that matter), we’re featuring a few of our favorite local products over the next two weeks!

Shae Thomas of Shae Shea

In 2013, native New Orleanian Shae Thomas had had enough of dealing with her sensitive skin. Plagued with eczema issues, Shae tried the different creams and such that promised to clear up her problems, but nothing seemed to work. So what does one do when one can’t find exactly what one needs? You make it yourself, of course!

While tinkering around with shea butter one day, Shae noticed that it helped improve her irritated skin. And here were the beginnings of her new company, Shae Shea (and you gotta admit…the name’s quite catchy)!

Shae Shea is a local bath and body business,” explained Shae. “When I first discovered shea butter, it really helped my skins, so I began making products with shea as the signature ingredient, from soaps to lotion to lip balms. Currently, I’m obsessed with the Tea Tree Oil Shea Butter Soap and the Shea Butter Hair Cream.”

Shae Shea’s line doesn’t stop with soap, lotions, and lip balms. You’ll also find soy candles (most popular is Mardi Gras; Shae’s favorite is Apple Cinnamon), deodorant (aluminum free with and made with shea butter and coconut oil), fragrance oils and laundry detergent all with sensitive-skinned people in mind.

For Shae, New Orleans “is absolutely my heart!,” she exclaimed. “I remember my first festival at Gentilly Fest. I had never sold my products to large groups of people and everyone was so supportive! It’s been really great to have a small business in New Orleans because there’s so much access to people from around the world.”
