Sandhya Garg, winner of New Orleans Fashion Week’s 2014 Top Design Competition

Written by  IntheNOLA.com
For the fifth year in a row, New Orleans will play host to its very own New Orleans Fashion Week. Over the course of a week (March 21-28), designers will showcase their newest threads, models will strut their stuff, and make-up artists and hair stylists will put on the final touches in over 50 runway shows at New Orleans Board of Trade (316 Magazine St.).

Amidst the flurry of activity going on that week, several designers will find themselves readying for a throw down…a fashion throw down better known as The Top Design Competition, with the winner receiving a highly-coveted prize package of retail presence in local boutiques, a manufacturing package, editorial coverage, photo shoots, and more.
2014 winner, Sandhya Garg, couldn’t be happier about the journey she took down the catwalk last year. “It feels great to have won the Top Design Competition. I was very excited to be a part of the event. Everyone showed amazing work, so I’m sure it was a tough choice for the esteemed judging panel. The prize package was so beneficial; I did an amazing photo shoot and regularly use my Brother "Project Runway" sewing machine. Also, the production package with NOLA Sewn helped me make many samples.”

Sandhya's interest in fashion started as a young girl. “I have designed and made clothes for myself and my dolls since I was 8 years old. By the time I was 10 years old, I was sure of where and what I wanted to be. The art of designing clothes is what feels natural to me. I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

Sandhya’s designs have been featured in Hemline Boutique, a local clothing store. She added, “The collection shown at New Orleans Fashion Week was inspired by the streets of Morocco and the local folklore of the evil eye. The doors in Moroccan houses are painted a bright blue to keep the evil out. I also incorporated the Islamic architectural elements and patterns. The whole collection right from textile prints to designing was done by me.”

For those up and coming designers, Sandhya Garg wants them to know to never give up. “The most important advice that I would give is never be discouraged and never give up. There will always be ten no's before one yes.”
