Musings of a First Time NOLA Mom: I kept Gabriel alive for a whole year!

Written by  LaTesha Gonzales
We’ve just finished celebrating Baby Godzilla’s (aka Gabriel Pierre Gonzales) first birthday. Yep, you read it right…he’s been here a whole year! One of my mom-friends with a baby boy the same age as Gabriel exclaimed to me, “Can’t believe we kept these boys alive for a year!” I couldn’t have said it better myself…

It’s so hard to believe that this time last year, I was complaining and complaining about being pregnant. The heartburn, leg cramps, and kicks to the ribs have now been replaced with a miniature Godzilla…a running, screaming, spitting, sometimes biting ball of baby. Yep, I’m head over heels in love.
Let’s take a look at some other fun facts of Gabriel Gonzales:

1. His nicknames include, but are not limited to: Gabe, Gabey Baby, Baby Godzilla, and Billy (as in Billy goat because he finds paper particularly tasty).

2. He loves to eat, particularly whatever is on your plate, as well as throw food off the sides of his high chair.

3. Nooks (pacifiers) are toys in this house. The left thumb is king here. But remember to always have a blanket (or onesie, dirty sock, your shirt) for him to hold whilst the thumb sucking occurs.

4. Do NOT talk to Gabriel before he has had his morning coffee (aka bottle).

5. He has the eyesight of an eagle. You would think we never clean the floors from his ability to spot minute specks of dirt on the kitchen floor, which he quickly picks up to taste.

Needless to say, we’ve been having a lot of fun raising us a New Orleans boy. He sleeps all night, likes strawberry snowballs and okra gumbo, and is one year closer to getting a job. What more can you ask for?

*Thanks to Raney-Mills Kiely for the title!
