Millennial Awards set for Saturday, July 26 ‘to honor dynamic young professionals’ in New Orleans

Written by  IntheNOLA.com
This Saturday, New Orleans will be celebrating the best of the best in our community with The Millennials, an “awards show honoring the dynamic, young professionals in the greater New Orleans area who have made significant contributions through public service, with award categories in Culinary Arts, Education, Social Entrepreneurship, Digital Media, Economic Development, and more.”

“The Millennials is an awards show and post party event honoring the dynamic young professionals in the greater New Orleans area who have made significant contributions through public service, and served as cultural ambassadors,” explained Ronald Evangelista, Administration and Special Projects Manager with Spears Consulting Group. “We are celebrating Generation Y and the outstanding work they are doing in various sectors of business, health care, education, community service, and more. This year, we will also crown the inaugural Official Millennial Foodie Destination." - See more at: http://www.inthenola.com/local-spotlights/events/item/4074-the-social-renaissance-hosts-second-annual-millennial-awards-a-celebration-of-a-generation#sthash.UhtYCE5t.dpuf

This year's finalists include several friends of IntheNOLA, including Jason Burns (one of our featured "First Time NOLA Daddies"), Chef Jordan Ruiz of The Munch Factory, Donna Crump of Good DanCe Since 1984, Jolie Bensen of Jolie and Elizabeth, and singer Robin Barnes. And new to this year's awards show is the crowning of the Official Millennial Foodie Destination. "Ten top restaurants from across New Orleans will create a 'millennial-inspired dish' for guests to sample. Each guest will then vote on his or her favorite dish. Guests will cast their vote for their favorite dish of the night, and the winner will be announced at the conclusion of the awards show. Some of your favorite restaurants will be vying for this title, including Sun Ray Grill/Aloha Sushi, Besh Steak, Galatoire's 33 Bar & Steak, The Grillroom, The Irish House, Manning's, Mizado Cocina, Mopho, The Munch Factory, and 'Namese Vietnamese Cafe."

We got to talking to a few of them and here's what they had to say:

Chef Matthew Murphy of the Irish House
"We would love to be recognized as the Millennial Restaurant Destination. Winning that designation would reaffirm our efforts to provide a great atmosphere, accommodating service, and rich cuisine to our guests."

Executive Chef Nhat Nguyen of 'Namese Vietnamese Cafe
"At 'Namese, we are trying to usher Vietnamese cuisine into the next millennium. Winning would give us the validation that we are moving in the right direction. At the show, we will have a new dish. We are revamping a traditional Vietnamese dish with local ingredients and a touch of French flair. The dish will be a rice crepe with minced pork, local crawfish, and in-house cured bacon topped with a saffron sauce."

Michael Gulotta of Mopho
"Winning the Millennial award would be a validation of our team's hard work and prove that it is possible to combine casual approachability with integrity and attention to detail. For the show, we are serving one of our house favorites, slow roasted Two Run Farms lamb neck in green curry with smoked ToLe's tofu, roasted beets and creole cream cheese Roti."

Executive Chef Larry Abrams of Manning's
"Winning to me means that I am in touch with the next generation and their wants and needs. It would be a great honor to win as this city is forever evolving and we want to stay ahead of that culinary transition. Millennials are the next generation of business owners and restaurant patrons. As they are entering the executive world, their desires are far different from anything we have ever encountered. They look for an energetic environment with quick small bites and great drinks as well."

Dale Harvey of Besh Steak
"Winning the Millennial Restaurant destination will be an honor, and introduce our steakhouse to a new market segment that might not otherwise have dined with us."

Chef Jordan Ruiz of The Munch Factory
"Winning the restaurant competition would mean so much because we would like to think we best represent Millennials of New Orleans. We are under 40 and took a big risk to open a restaurant all by ourselves in a neighborhood that was still up and coming at the time. It would mean so much for our place that we have put our heart and soul into to achieve such recognition. The Munch Factory will be serving braised short ribs over herb grits with bread pudding. It's a dish we do that has always been a favorite of Millennials."

Chef Michael Sichel of Galatoire's 33 Bar & Steak
"When we created Galatoire's 33 Bar & Steak, we envisioned it to be the hip place for locals to have a drink, enjoy the beautiful bar and be at home on Bourbon St. We are a steak house with many modern creations and techniques, while continuing with a traditional Galatoire's experience for the next generation to establish it as their own."

Owners/Chefs Greg Reggio, Hans Limburg, and Gary Darling of Mizado Cocina
"Winning this award validates what we have done. We wanted to create a place where people can come, gather with friends, and have a full experience. Mizado is a very social restaurant – from the food to the cocktails to the overall vibe. So far, the feedback has been very positive but actually winning the Millennial Restaurant Destination title would be confirmation for us, and the rest of the city that we are a place to come live it up. We will be serving our duck tamale and a ceviche at the event. The duck tamale is currently on the menu and a favorite at the restaurant. The ceviche is new and we will be adding it to the menu after the Millennial Awards. It’s a Peruvian style fresh Gulf fish ceviche and once added we will have a total of five ceviches on our menu."

We wish ALL the nominees the best of luck and we hope to see you at the Millennials, “a celebration of a generation!”
