Eat Local Challenge: Glynda passes the torch to LaTesha for Week 2 of the Team InthekNOwla Relay

Written by
I’m nervous. Really nervous. If you read my short bio, you’ll know that while I’m a very picky eater, I recognize the need to eat a more balanced and healthy diet. I’ve recognized the need for a better diet and feel quite confident in that area. Now, actually implementing that diet as a result of this realization is…well, it just is…

Glynda, the first member on the InthekNOwla Relay Team, has finished up her week and passed the torch (or in our case, the bottle of Bissap Breeze) to me. So first things first, take stock of the local stuff I already have in my kitchen: snap peas from Rouses, rosemary and mint from the Crescent City Farmers Market, honey from Colfax, blueberries from Folsom, salt from Breaux Bridge, and water from Kentwood (wait, does that count?). Hmmm…not sure how far this will get me…
Seeing that my local items couldn’t actually make a full meal, I went to three of my favorite places, the New Orleans Food Co-op, Rouses, and the Hollygrove Market.

Here’s what my Hollygrove loot consisted of: cucumbers (2), peaches (3), plums (5), eggplant (1), zucchini (1), squash (1), blueberries (1 pint), tomatoes (2), red potatoes (3), shitake mushrooms (1 bag), microgreens (1 bag), green bell peppers (2)…ALL for $25! While I was there, I also picked up eggs, milk, and flour. At the Food Co-op, I got some green onions, green beans, oregano, and brown rice. At Rouses, I got some chicken and beef. Of course, the meat is in no way local…I’d love to buy local meat, but my budget just won’t allow it. So for the time being, buying from a local store will have to suffice.

For my first foray in local cooking, I’m gonna try some Zucchini and Summer Squash Chips, a Peach Smoothie, Eggplant Rolls, some Sangria, and something combining the other vegetables with the meat.

Alrighty, here goes nothing!
