Lemonade Day with New Orleans’ young entrepreneurs

Written by
By now, we’re pretty sure you know how focused InthekNOwla is on showcasing and promoting small businesses in New Orleans. And this Saturday, don’t be surprised at just how many new ones you’re gonna find throughout the New Orleans area on corners and in front houses and businesses, all with one goal in mind…to teach our young New Orleanians the ins and outs of running their own small business.

So just what small business could these young people be actually running? Well, InthekNOwlians, be prepared to sip your way through the city with Lemonade Day, “a free, fun, experiential learning program that teaches youth how to start, own and operate their own business using a lemonade stand as well as fundamental lessons about life, success and themselves.”
With 150,000 kids in 32 cities, Lemonade Day “empowers youth to take ownership of their lives and become productive members of society – the business leaders, social advocates, volunteers, and forward thinking citizens of tomorrow.”

Lemonade Day entrepreneurs coordinate EVERYTHING, from creating a budget and deciding on a name for their stand, to finding investors and workers to serve the customers. “Each child that registers receives a backpack with an Entrepreneur Workbook that teaches them the 14 lessons of Lemonade Day like creating budgets, setting profit-making goals, serving customers, repaying investors, and giving back to the community. Along the way, they acquire skills in goal-setting, problem solving, and gain self-esteem critical for future success. They keep all the money they make and are encouraged to spend some, save some and share some.”

What a great way for our young New Orleanians to learn the tricks and the trade of operating a small business! And considering that New Orleans is such a hub for small businesses, it’s not a moment too soon! Most Lemonade Day entrepreneurs bring in between $150-$250 in profit and can set up anywhere in the city (as long as they have permission from property and business owners).

Even more, Lemonade Day in New Orleans was chosen as one of five cities that will have a representative from the National Entrepreneurship Foundation gallivanting through the streets of New Orleans enjoying lemonade (and we’re sure New Orleans will have the best lemonade of all :).

Something new this year for Lemonade Day is matching young entrepreneurs with other small businesses to have these young entrepreneurs sell their lemonade in front of their offices. And InthekNOwla is too excited to host a lemonade stand…from one team of young entrepreneurs at InthekNOwla to even younger entrepreneurs who are just starting out on this great journey of being one’s own boss.

So get out and buy some lemonade from a budding entrepreneur this Saturday!
