A night of delight at ESY NOLA's "Edible Evening"

Written by  Heather E. Ferdinand
Just an "Edible Evening?" Try a scrumptious sampling of the best dishes New Orleans has to offer with non-stop music under a starry night in the most breathtaking garden. Ooooozing both romantic and social appeal, "An Edible Evening" at the Edible Schoolyard New Orleans was the perfect atmosphere to enjoy with your loved one or a night out with friends. This event was hands down one of the best fundraisers in the city. With an awesome turnout present to celebrate and support an incredible local program, surprisingly, there was never a wait to sample any number of the traditional cuisines served by more than twenty local restaurants. Wine flowed, Abita refreshed, and the cocktail of the night, a mixture of beet juice and vodka, definitely wowed and impressed.
Upon entering Samuel J. Green Charter School, you were greeted by the exotic sounds of Ivory Coast composer and African Drummer Seguenon Kone. Inside the transformed cafeteria were dimmed lights and jazzy tunes from the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts Jazz Ensemble. Partygoers surrounded tall tables covered in white cloth with centerpieces fresh from the ESY NOLA garden. The air was filled with aromatic scents of New Orleans cuisine and the teaching kitchen smelled of freshly harvested herbs, fruits, and vegetables. Program volunteers prepared special hor d'oeuvres of a delicious spread of cream cheese and herbs topped with freshly diced strawberries from their organic garden.

How can we begin to express how impressed we were by the atmosphere that has been created at this school with this program. The children attending an ESY NOLA school are learning above and beyond the norm of the typical state administered test and are instead taught the values of responsiblity, respect, and gratitude among others.

From the dozens of happy handmade signs, fantastical garden sculptures and benches, and walls of flowering art, it’s apparent that if your child isn’t attending an ESY NOLA school, he or she should be!
