Tru Rootz 2nd Annual Natural Hair Show

Written by  LaTesha Gonzales

(InthekNOwla) -- Alright my natural NOLA girlies, we are coming up! While we may not be on the level of Atlanta or Washington D.C. (yet), the natural scene is just continuing to expand…case in point, the Tru Rootz 2nd Annual Natural Hair Show. This will be my first hair show and I am too excited!

Well, I got to sit down and chat with Cornell Summrell, the owner of Tru Rootz Natural Hair Salon and mastermind of the upcoming hair show. Before getting to the nitty gritty, I wanted to find out about Craig’s journey to becoming a natural hair stylist. He explained, “I’ve been doing natural hair for about 10 years now, but it was completely coincidental. I didn’t start out with the intention of doing hair because I had never done it before. But, I had a bad experience with a stylist with her being inconsistent. So I started doing my own hair and my brother’s and a friend of mine, and that’s how it all began. From there, people started asking where they were getting their hair done and it just kept growing and growing.”

For about a year and half, Cornell was doing hair out of his house until he started working at a natural hair salon called Seven Locs where he gained the majority of his knowledge of natural hair and the business aspects. On February 17, 2006, Cornell opened his own natural hair salon, Tru Rootz, providing some much needed positivity, encouragement, and community upliftment after such devastating losses from Hurricane Katrina. Cornell said, “People don’t realize how doing someone’s hair can really lift their spirits. They’ll come in one way and after getting their hair done, they’ll just feel so much better and leave out with a beautiful smile on their face because they feel good about themselves. So that made me feel good about what I do. That’s when I learned that I loved doing hair; I loved what I do and I loved my job.”

Tru Rootz specializes in everything dealing with natural hair, including those of us who are in the transitioning phase. Y’all don’t know how happy I am to have found someone to do my hair!

Now, the natural hair show is going to be nothing short of spectacular. The theme is: “Transforming Hair Into a Work of Art, Showcasing: The 7 Deadly Sins.” In case you forgot, the 7 deadly sins are: lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, anger, envy, and pride. Ooohhhh, sounds fun! Cornell explained, “The show’s gonna be phenomenal. When you walk in, it’s gonna be set up like an art gallery; every room will have an exhibit with live art. So when you walk into the room of lust, that’s what you’re gonna see. When you walk into the room of gluttony, that’s what’s gonna be there. Of course, we’re gonna have various live entertainers and vendors. Charmaine Neville will be making a special appearance and I just got word that Sidney Poitier’s nephew, Jeffrey Poitier, will also be making an appearance. So, it’s definitely gonna be good.”

Well, we are more than ready for Sunday! Art and natural hair together is sure to be a good time. We sure hope we see a bunch of NOLA naturals there!
