Monthly arts market on Oretha Castle Haley Blvd.

(InthekNOwla) -- NEW ORLEANS | Got a question: How many markets were in the city when you were growing up? If you’re anywhere close to our ages at InthekNOwla, you’ll probably name the French Market and...yep, the French Market is the only one we can remember.

However, we’re sure you’ve noticed the surge in farmers and arts markets throughout the city, from the Freret Market and Hollygrove Market to the Crescent City Farmers Market and Sankofa Farmers Market. On any given Saturday, you might have three or four to get to!

And even if we’re not in the buying spirit at the time, we actually really enjoy going to the different markets around the city. It’s a great way to meet people and see the many kinds of businesses and artists that are alive and well in the city. And of course, we appreciate markets like these because they allow us to buy locally, something that has become an important mission of ours at InthekNOwla.

One of the arts markets we recently attended was the O.C.H. Art Market on Oretha Castle Haley Blvd. in Central City on the first floor of the Zeitgeist Multi Disciplinary Arts Center. Now we don’t know about y’all, but this part of the city is not necessarily known for its beauty or liveliness. In fact, this specific area is quite sleepy…like it never woke up after Katrina.

But the O.C.H. Art Market is hoping to indeed wake this area up and bring more foot traffic to the neighborhood.

Started in November 2010, the market occurs monthly and features an array of artists, entrepreneurs, and food. This month’s market on Saturday, October 15 is a Latino-themed market sponsored by Juan’s Flying Burrito. The market will include Latin music and food, including some delicious plates by the Latino Farmers Cooperative of Louisiana and gourmet cupcakes from Creole Cupcakes. In addition, there will be other vendors, such as Sweetlove Candles, Shultzilla, and more. And it’s just in time to get some (or even all) of your Christmas shopping done!

So, if you’re out and about this Saturday, why not check out the O.C.H. Art Market? It sure as hell beats looking around in Wally World…
