The Yard Dogs Road Show at The RepublicWritten by InthekNOwla.com Staff
(InthekNOwla) -- New Orleans is known for its quirkiness…jazz and gumbo mixed in with burlesque and cabaret mixed in with second lines and parades. Basically, you never know what you’re gonna get on any given day.
This past Wednesday, we had some more mixing to do with the Yard Dogs Road Show. The Yard Dogs Road Show is a 13 member variety show stopped in New Orleans for their third performance here in the Big Easy.
The show is all about performing in different areas and giving people a high quality experience with burlesque, magic, sideshows, and musical performances. In true artist form, the Yard Dogs make their own costumes, record and produce their own music, and plan their own tours. By doing everything themselves, they hope that others will take their example and live their dreams as well.
The Yard Dogs have been performing for the past 10 years and has seen their influence grow as new performance groups emerge after seeing the Yard Dogs perform. Micha D. (bass guitar player, singer, and part tour manager of the Yard Dogs) explained, “We really like to go to these towns that don’t have a show like ours and then to go back the next year and see that people have put together their own act. That’s really rewarding for us. We get a lot of props from other groups for influencing them.”
The Yard Dogs originally started as a jug band, a band that uses a jug player (a musical instrument from the 1920s) and a mix of traditional and home made instruments, and started to grow very quickly. As Micha said, “The band just keep growing and growing. Soon other acts were joining and we started to meet more and more people along the way. But we really appreciate the organic chemistry that formed the group.”
For those of you who may have seen the show the last time it was in New Orleans, don’t expect to see that same show again…you’re in for something completely different. Micha said, “It’s a whole new show. New Orleans is one of our most favorite places to perform. There’s so much history here and it’s truly one of the most unique cities in the US.”
The Yard Dogs Road Show performed for one night only on Wednesday, October 6th at The Republic.
