Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca at Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre

Written by  InthekNOwla.com Staff

(InthekNOwla) -- NEW ORLEANS | Now, us New Orleanians are no strangers to a good time. Whether it be sitting on the porch drinking beers on a lazy Sunday afternoon or catching a second line Uptown, we know a good time when we see it. Well, InthekNOwla had the esteemed privilege to be a part of a different kind of entertainment, the theatre. Truthfully, many local New Orleanians don't go to the theatre very much, but the show we recently saw will make you ask yourself why in the world you ain't been doing this sooner!

So, last Friday, we attended the
Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca performance at the Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre. Le Petit Theatre is one of the gems of New Orleans, an intimate and charming community theatre downtown across from St. Louis Cathedral. When entering the mainstage, you feel like you're going into your own personal theatre...a performance just for you. The mainstage offers 375 seats, so no matter where you sit, the stage is right there.

After getting comfortable in our seats, we were treated to the performance of a lifetime! Exhilarating, passion, desire, intrigue, fire, seductive...basically A-MA-ZING! The singing, the guitar playing, the foot, arm, and hand work transform you to another world. You can't catch your breath, or take your eyes off the stage, or stop your heart from beating so fast. From the second they stepped on stage, we were transfixed. How do they move their feet so fast? Is it possible for that sound to come out of one person? Do they have bones in their arms or hands?

The dancers, singers, and musicians move as one cohesive body. One cannot exist without the other. They are constantly watching each other and egging each other on with "¡Ole, ole!" You can FEEL the passion the members of Noche Flamenca have for their art and each other. From the rousing, almost animalistic sounds of the singers, to the sometimes slow and sensual and other times fast and wild playing of the guitarists, to the sharp, sexy, and tantalizing movements of the dancers...Noche Flamenca does not disappoint. You gotta be deaf, blind, and dumb not to feel anything!

Flamenco, in some ways, is very much like the call-and-response type songs and dances that are so popular in New Orleans. Think about any Bounce music, like DJ Jubilee or Partners 'N' Crime, or second lines throughout the city. There is an integral relationship between musician, singer, and dancer. Without one of these components, you have nothing...like a body without a heart.

Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca will be here until Sunday, June 13. If you have the chance to see them, please, please go! They are a wonderful addition to New Orleans art scene. Now, if only we could find somewhere to take flamenco classes...
