Louisiana SPCA hosts 33rd annual ‘Dog Day Walk-a-thon and Festival,’ March 22

Written by  Louisiana SPCA
Sunday, March 22, the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LASPCA) will host the 33rd annual Dog Day Walk-a-thon and Festival at City Park's Big Lake Lawn. Dog Day is a dog-friendly event that unites animal and festival lovers alike with local music, services and treats from animal vendors and artists, dog barn hunt demos, dog contests and great prizes!

With an expected attendance of more than 2,000 people, Dog Day takes place from 11:00am to 4:00pm and is free to attend. WDSU's Randi Rousseau and WGNO's chief meteorologist Hank Allen will serve as this year's celebrity emcees. Proceeds from Dog Day benefit the 33,000 animals the Louisiana SPCA cares for each year with the majority of the funds being raised through The Gatsby Strut, the oldest dog walk in the state.
Individuals, teams and their pets interested in attending Dog Day are invited to participate in The Gatsby Strut. The Gatsby Strut will commence at noon and take participants around Big Lake for a 1-mile fun walk with their furry friends. Registration for the walk is free, but participants must raise a minimum of $25 to take home a Dog Day T-shirt and tote bag. Other fundraising prizes include an official Dog Day sports bottle, Louisiana SPCA pet first aid starter kit and the opportunity to make your pet famous by being named the official Chair Dog (or cat) at Dog Day 2016. Additionally, the company/organization who raises the most money will be able to display a coveted Haydel's Mardi Gras Bead Dog at their headquarters until Dog Day next year!

Dog Day is the perfect afternoon to jump-start festival season and a doggone good time for friends and family. Festival attractions include live music by Partly Cloudy, a margarita and beer bar, food court, pet friendly vendors, dog obedience demonstrations and dog contests where pooches compete for Best Dressed, Owner/Pet Look-a-Like and Silly Pet Tricks! The contests are a big draw for local residents and dog lovers alike and will be judged by celebrity judges Jeff Charleston, Saints Super Bowl champion; Aaron Williamson, celebrity trainer and actor; and Margarita Bergen, local personality. Dogs available for adoption from the Louisiana SPCA and local rescue groups will also
be on-site hoping to find their forever homes.
