Propeller competition turns to community to solve New Orleans’s biggest challenges

Written by  Propeller
Propeller: A Force for Social Innovation, Tulane University’s A.B. Freeman School of Business and Tulane University Center for Engaged Learning & Teaching seek applications for PitchNOLA: Community Solutions, a live business pitch competition providing community members a platform to pitch their solutions to local challenges.

Ideas offering support to children and families, the environment, workforce development and economic security for hard to employ populations are encouraged to apply by Dec. 19.
The contest is open to individuals or teams based in the greater New Orleans area. Propeller will host question-and-answer sessions for interested applicants from 5:30- 6:30pm on Thursday, October 28, and from 12:00-1:00pm on Wednesday, November 12 at the Propeller Incubator (4035 Washington Ave.).

Selected semi-finalists will pitch their ideas in front of a voting audience and panel of celebrity judges – including Matt Flannery, founder of Kiva and Puddle, and Leslie Jacobs, CEO of the New Orleans Startup Fund and founder of PowerMoves NOLA – for the chance at over $5,000 in cash prizes. The competition is scheduled on Jan 28, 2015, at Tulane University.

Past PitchNOLA winners have grown their ventures to create tremendous community impact. The Justice and Accountability Center, which won in 2012, has since provided expungements to over 1,000 individuals previously incarcerated for non-violent crimes to reduce recidivism. Past winner Crescent City Connections has recruited 1,200 volunteers, facilitated their contribution of over $155,000 in labor and was one of the top businesses to watch in 2014 in New Orleans Magazine.

PitchNOLA is made possible through the sponsorship of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and Tulane University.
