Schlumberger, the world’s leading supplier of technology, integrated project management and information solutions to customers working in the oil and gas industry worldwide, will sponsor the annual Strike for STEM fundraiser Sat., Nov. 1 to benefit Core Element, a nonprofit organization promoting quality teaching in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) in Greater New Orleans. Core Element’s Strike for STEM is a disco-themed team bowling competition taking place from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Mid-City Rock ‘n’ Bowl, 3000 S. Carrolton Ave. Tickets are $50 and are available at
Featuring music by The Wiseguys and a performance by New Orleans dance troupe The Disco Amigos, Strike for STEM will be a night of delectable food and beverages, bowling and entertainment. Eighteen teams will compete to win the 2014 Strike for STEM bowling trophy, and a Strike for STEM raffle will provide the winners with one of three prizes, including Disney hopper passes.
Schlumberger generously sponsors Strike for STEM and supports additional Core Element efforts throughout the year, including the organization’s first Core Element Summer STEM Camp, which offered students and teachers a fun and busy week of hands-on STEM learning and team-building activities designed to develop critical reasoning and analytic thinking skills necessary for high-demand careers of the 21st century.
“Schlumberger is excited to champion Core Element’s fundraiser Strike for STEM and to support its innovative programs to provide interactive professional development opportunities for teachers that enhance the education of children in the region,” said Charlie Vise, Corporate Accounts Director for Schlumberger.
The Louisiana Association of Business and Industry projects Louisiana will gain 69,000 STEM-related jobs between now and 2018, while nationally, children in the United States are falling further behind their international peers in every STEM subject area.
“We feel fortunate to have sponsors and individuals who understand the importance of STEM education on the future of our youth and region and are excited to have so many supporters of this year’s Strike for STEM,” said Jan Brenan, Executive Director of Core Element.
Board President David Huete added, “Core Element supports the philosophy that the most effective classroom teaching is student-centered. Core Element’s focus is to provide teachers with the tools and training to create interactive, discovery-based education for students to stimulate their interest in the applications of science, technology and math and provide a STEM-focused career pathway for the innovations of the future.”
