The Kupcake Factory hosts 3rd annual cupcake eating contest to benefit Muscular Dystrophy

Written by  The Kupcake Factory

The Kupcake Factory is hosting its Third Annual Cupcake Eating Contest Saturday, April 12, at 11:30 a.m. to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) at its “Krewe of MDA” Muscle Walk presented by Mr. Wheelchair at Zephyr Field that morning.

The Cupcake Eating Contest participants will be provided 20 Kupcake Factory cupcakes and will be given five minutes to eat as many cupcakes as possible. The first place winner will receive unlimited bragging rights, a t-shirt and two-dozen regular-sized cupcakes for their next birthday or celebration, donated by The Kupcake Factory. The second place winner will receive a $15 Kupcake Factory gift card and third place will get a Kupcake Factory t-shirt. Contest entry is $25 for individuals or $50 for company-sponsored contestants. The proceeds from participant registration will be donated to MDA. The deadline to enter is Wednesday, April 9, and contestants can register online at MDA’s website. Visit The Kupcake Factory’s team page for more information or the Facebook event page.

In addition, there will be a local celebrity version of the contest this year. Sports Reporter, Sharief Ishaq from WDSU is scheduled to appear as well as punter and kickoff specialist for the New Orleans Saints, Thomas Morstead. The celebrities will receive Kupcake Factory t-shirts for their participation and one will be crowned the 2014 cupcake-eating champion.

“As someone who’s had friends and family affected by this disease, I feel it’s important to give back and support MDA’s mission,” said Claudia Melgar, owner of The Kupcake Factory, “This event has gained a lot of popularity at the Muscle Walk and we’re excited that we can host an event that participants look forward to each and every year.”

Prior to the Cupcake Eating Contest, MDA’s Muscle Walk registration will open at 9 a.m. and entertainment will begin around 10 a.m. Muscle Walk volunteers will guide patrons through interactive craft booths and the event will feature appearances from Sir Saint and Gumbo from the New Orleans Saints and Boudreaux and Clotile from the New Orleans Zephyrs. About The Kupcake Factory

The Kupcake Factory is New Orleans’ own sweets boutique, locally owned and operated by two native New Orleanians. When Claudia Melgar and her sister Victoria came back to New Orleans after evacuating for Hurricane Katrina, they realized they wouldn’t be able to open their former business. This allowed them to do some soul searching and their love for their city, and for cupcakes, lead them to open The Kupcake Factory in 2008. Now, with four locations (French Quarter, Veterans, Uptown and Kenner), The Kupcake Factory touts more than 30 original cupcake flavors, all made from scratch with 12 different flavors offered daily.
