The Native’s Guide to Summer 2014: ‘Temperature Lunch’ at the Palace Cafe

If you've been outside in the last few days, then you know that summer is definitely here…which means, we’re at the whims of the heat for at least the next months.

But, being at the beck and call of the heat might not be such a bad thing. That probably sounds ridiculous, but trust us, the Palace Café on Canal St. has made the heat their friend (and ours too) with their annual Temperature Lunch.

Here’s how the Temperature Lunch works: Each day, a two-course lunch is prepared for lunch available from 11:30am-2:30pm. The two courses include a choice of soup (their delicious turtle soup is only $1.50 extra) or Werlein salad with the chefs entrée of the day (which changes daily).

Now, this is where gets interesting. The lunch is priced at the previous day’s high temperature. So, for example, if today’s high temperature is 92°F, then tomorrow’s lunch will be $9.20. You can't beat that!

One of the options last week was Cane syrup glazed Gulf shrimp with jalapeno cornbread dressing and topped with grilled peaches for…$8.30 (the previous day’s high temperature was obviously 83°F)! And while you're at it, you might as well get some Crab Claws Bordelaise and finish it off with their world famous Bananas Foster.

The entrée for the Temperature Lunch changes daily and is posted to the Palace Café’s Facebook and Twitter pages every morning. Temperature Lunch runs until Labor Day, so you got plenty of time to get you a good meal.
