‘Drew’s Tunes Bowl-A-Thon’ at Fulton Alley celebrates the life of Drew Joseph Boswell and his love of music

Written by
On November 27, 2012, Georgia and Devron Boswell welcomed their first child into the world, a bouncing baby boy they named Drew Joseph Boswell. Over the next fifteen months, Drew did what most New Orleanians do…he ate (and ate some more), he danced (and danced some more), and above all, he enjoyed his music! “Drew was constantly ‘playing’ an array of instruments including kazoos, bongos, and his favorite little red piano!” laughed mom Georgia Boswell.
On the night of March 11, 2014 after a happy and fun evening, Georgia and Devron laid a smiling baby Drew down in his crib for bed. Unfortunately, as night turned into morning, tragedy struck. “When we went to wake up our little man the next morning on March 12, he had passed away in his sleep,” said Georgia. “In that instant, the world as we knew it was gone. The preliminary results revealed no cause for Drew’s passing. There were many unanswered questions that day.”
On the day of Drew’s passing, March 12, 2014, Georgia and Drew came up with Drew’s Tunes, a non-profit organization with a mission to celebrate Drew’s life “by providing musical instruments to children, exposing them to local musicians, and supporting clinical research into Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC).”

“Devron and I were determined to not let the hate take over our hearts and instead make the world better,” explained Georgia. “Drew taught us how to love more than we ever imagined and this love fueled us to want to make a difference. To date, Drew’s Tunes has donated over $100,000 in support of our mission, including $30,000 to support SUDC research. In addition, fifteen hundred local children have benefited from the musical resources (instruments, classes, performances) provided by Drew’s Tunes and over 1,000 new instruments have been donated to further music education at local programs at the Music Collaborative, Kingsley House and McMillian’s First Steps.”
On Saturday, August 27, Drew’s Tunes will be holding their annual fundraiser, the 3rd annual Drew’s Tunes Bowl-A-Thon at Fulton Alley (600 Fulton St.), to continue to honor Drew and further the mission of Drew’s Tunes. “The Bowl-A-Thon will be a fun, family-friendly atmosphere at Fulton Alley with lots of bowling, a balloon artist, face painters, and two local bands, The Prescriptions and The Topcats, in addition to a silent auction and raffle. Although bowling teams are sold out, there are plenty of general admission tickets available for $20 in advance and $25 at the door, which includes two drinks and a good time!”
For Georgia and Devron, there’s not a day that goes by that they don’t think of their baby boy. “When I think of Drew, I think of his big smile. I think of how sweet his spirit was and how much love he gave to everyone he met,” Georgia said. “Drew loved music most of all and dancing to his favorite song, ‘Move It, Move It.’ My arms literally ache for him and there is no way to articulate how much we hurt for our baby boy. Despite all the grief, it is impossible not to smile when thinking about Drew.”
She concluded, “For other families who have lost a child, simply existing for a minute without your child requires more strength than you ever knew you were capable of. Whether they start a charity or can’t bear to say their child’s name, every person grieves and processes things differently. Yet, each and every one of us is a hero. Allow yourself to heal in the manner that feels right to you. You will smile again. You will laugh again. You will have good days again. You will never get ‘over it’ and you will never be the same, but you can move forward with love.”
