FirstLine Schools, Dinner Lab host ‘garden dining experience’ to support signature educational programs, October 14

Written by
The partnership between FirstLine Schools, a series of five charter schools in the city, and Dinner Lab, a pop up dining event, may seem a little strange at first, but nonetheless interesting.
FirstLine Schools operates five open-enrollment public charter schools in New Orleans: Arthur Ashe Charter School, Phillis Wheatley Community School, S. J. Green Charter School, Langston Hughes Academy, and Clark Prep High School. These five schools serve 2,400 young New Orleanians from every part of the city and “offer innovative programs for students, including the nationally acclaimed Edible Schoolyard New Orleans.”
Dinner Lab, on the other hand, “is a consumer dining experience that brings together up and coming chefs and an exclusive membership interested in exploring innovative ideas in food to unique spaces that would never otherwise be known to the public.” Dinner Lab members sign up for a dinner in their city, receive the details of the dinner 24 hours before the event, then show up for a special kind of dining experience complete with “communal dining tables to promote lively discussion and new friendships.”
So what are these two organizations going to do together? Well, FirstLine Schools in partnership with Dinner Lab and sponsored by Circular Consulting, LLC will be hosting Dinner After the Bell!, a garden dining experience and fundraiser to support the FirstLine Schools’ many signature educational programs.
“Dinner Lab is a pop up dining event that started in New Orleans and is now expanding across the country,” explained Ericka Windon, Development Manager and In House Counsel for FirstLineSchools. “Dinner Lab allows chefs to do what they do best - be creative in the kitchen - without any restrictions. The pop up dinners are one-night only events in some of the most unique locations. Diners/members who purchase tickets to the dinner receive the dining location the day before the event. Dinners have taken place in old churches, warehouses, you name it. We decided to collaborate with Dinner Lab, because like us, they are trying to deliver unique experiences to their patrons. At FirstLine Schools, we strive to nurture the whole child in mind, body, and spirit and that can be seen in our classrooms, and programs such as Edible Schoolyard NOLA, Summer Camp X, and more.”
Described as a “friendraising and fundraising event,” FirstLine Schools is looking to New Orleans' young professionals. “We want to engage our young professionals and let them get to know our homegrown network of schools in New Orleans,” Ericka said. We are focusing on cutting edge professional development for our teachers, for example, our teacher prep day initiative where once a week, teachers of each grade/subject across our network of five schools will collaborate, plan lessons, look at student work, practice new techniques, and determine best practices. We also are seeking to expand our STEM offerings and programs that prepare our students for high school, careers, and beyond, such as robotics clubs, more personalized and blended learning, FirstLine’s ESYNOLA program, and our career and technical education program, NOLA Tech, a signature program of our high school Joseph S. Clark Preparatory.”
Like all Dinner Lab events, things are top secret! “Even though we can’t reveal much about Dinner After the Bell!, we can say that our guests can look forward to great food, great conversations, and a beautiful setting,” Ericka noted. Guests will also get a chance to learn more about FirstLine Schools and our vision of every child in New Orleans going to a great school. And we promise, no speeches or presentations, just an opportunity to mix and mingle with other civic-minded New Orleanians.”
