Over the past six years, IntheNOLA.com has had the privilege of telling the stories of our local entrepreneurs in our Entrepreneur Spotlights. In total, we’ve featured 30 entrepreneurs, from Robert Dula of NOLA Gondola in 2010 to Niala and Tia Howard of Magnolia Makeup in 2011 to Chet Pourciau of Chet Pourciau Design in 2012 to Simone Bruni Crouere of Demo Diva in 2013 to Maggie Doussan of Baby Boot Camp New Orleans in 2014 to Stirling Barrett of KREWE du Optic in 2015.

With 2016, we’re excited to usher in more entrepreneurs to add to the existing “IntheNOLA Entrepreneur Alumni” with our first spotlight of the year, Genevieve Douglass of KINDRED Studios!

Have you always wanted to join a Mardi Gras krewe? You know, like Zulu or Endymion? Well, we got one you can join! One that even the likes of singer Beyonce and actress Dascha Polanco (Orange is the New Black) are members of.

That’s right, you can be a part of a special krewe…the KREWE du Optic, a “New Orleans based and culturally inspired eyewear company” and IntheNOLA’s first Entrepreneur Spotlight of 2015!

As many of you know, IntheNOLA’s editor, LaTesha, recently gave birth to her first child, Master Gabriel (check out her column, Musings of a First Time NOLA Mom). And like any mother, she’s in the midst of trying to balance motherhood with life. Career vs. baby music class, eating a boring spinach salad vs. chowing down on a hotdog from Dreamy Weenies, or the ultimate…exercising while the baby’s sleeping vs. sleeping while the baby’s sleeping.

Our old friend exercise…

UPDATE: Congratulations to the ZukaBaby team on the opening of their new location in Metairie (3248 Severn Ave.) in addition to their Uptown location (2122 Magazine St.)!

Let’s start at the beginning: what in the world is a ZukaBaby? It’s actually pretty easy…see “zuker” means sugar in German, but you know New Orleanians don’t have a need for ‘-er’ endings on words, so a ZukaBaby is just a sweet, New Orleans baby.

But ZukaBaby is not only one of those sweet babies you just wanna squeeze and kiss, it’s also an Uptown natural parenting boutique that “carries environmentally and socially responsible products and provides support to families seeking natural solutions to modern parenting” as well as “specializing in cloth diapers, baby wearing, breastfeeding, natural toys, and organic layettes.”

IntheNOLA’s fearless leader, Jeff Gonzales, is all about having a healthy and fit body and mind. He can explain the ills of high fructose corn syrup and the benefits of doing at least twenty minutes of exercise per day while encouraging both spiritual and mental well being. Yep, we have our own guru at the IntheNOLA offices.

Jeff is always looking for things that will enhance both the body and mind as they work in tandem with each other, which is why when he came across NOLA Aikido in Mid City, he knew this was a place to reconcile the two.
