Entrepreneur Spotlight: Maggie Doussan of Baby Boot Camp New Orleans

Written by  IntheNOLA.com
As many of you know, IntheNOLA’s editor, LaTesha, recently gave birth to her first child, Master Gabriel (check out her column, Musings of a First Time NOLA Mom). And like any mother, she’s in the midst of trying to balance motherhood with life. Career vs. baby music class, eating a boring spinach salad vs. chowing down on a hotdog from Dreamy Weenies, or the ultimate…exercising while the baby’s sleeping vs. sleeping while the baby’s sleeping.

Our old friend exercise…
For many moms, exercise is the last thing on their list to do. Hell, with breastfeeding, school, and birthday parties, there are plenty other things they could be doing with their time, especially in New Orleans. But we’ve found an exercise program by moms for moms. Put on that workout gear that’s been collecting dust in the closet, get the stroller and diaper bag packed, and make your way to Baby Boot Camp New Orleans, our first Local Entrepreneur Spotlight for 2014!

“Baby Boot Camp New Orleans is an innovative stroller fitness program that helps moms regain or enhance pre-pregnancy fitness levels and meet the physical challenges of parenting by emphasizing strength training in a supportive environment,” said Maggie Doussan, owner and instructor of Baby Boot Camp New Orleans. “After giving birth to my son in December 2011, I discovered Baby Boot Camp through Baby Boot Camp Baton Rouge and instantly knew that this program was just what the city and my family needed. I knew that I needed to find a career that enabled me to work, but not sacrifice my time with my family. I also knew that New Orleans moms needed an outlet to get fit without feeling guilty about leaving their little ones behind and without spending a fortune on childcare.”

Baby Boot Camp New Orleans provides New Orleans moms with a fun environment to get fit. Our classes combine fitness and fun. Baby Boot Camp’s most popular stroller fitness class, STROLLFIT, is a 60-minute class format for mom and baby,” Maggie explained. “STROLLFIT classes cater to all fitness levels: pregnant moms, new moms recovering from pregnancy and conditioned moms with one or two stroller-aged children. Cardio drills, strength training exercises, and stretching increases overall fitness, and the ab assault followed by a yoga based cool down stretch at the end of class means you get a total body workout! Parents can expect not only a true boot camp style workout, but plenty of fun for both them and their child. Instead of counting reps or timing each exercise, we sing songs and play games to keep the babies entertained.”

Our editor took her first Baby Boot Camp class when Master Gabriel was about three months old. And when it was over…she was done! Maggie worked her out and she loved it!

But Baby Boot Camp New Orleans is not only about exercising, it’s also a great place to meet other moms. “A unique attribute of Baby Boot Camp is the fact that every member has something in common; we are all new parents!” laughed Maggie. “We all understand the joys and struggles that new parents face at this time in our lives. This instantly creates an incredibly supportive environment where moms can feel completely comfortable. That comfort aids our class members in growing from workout buddies to lifelong friends! The social aspect of Baby Boot Camp is not only great for moms, but for the babies as well. Our children also form lasting friendships. Baby Boot Camp New Orleans is excellent socialization for moms and babies!”

One of the best parts of Baby Boot Camp New Orleans for Maggie is that she is able to bring her son to work with her each and every day. “My son, August, is two years old and he has been attending Baby Boot Camp since he was three months old! Now that he is two I can really see the positive impact Baby Boot Camp has had on him. He gets excited to see his friends when we are on our way to camp. The very best part of having my son with me at Baby Boot Camp is seeing him grow into a child that truly enjoys exercise. I feel confident that this will help him to continue to make healthy lifestyle choices in the future.”

She continued, “By exercising with our children, we are setting an example for healthy lifestyle choices for our little ones. Parents who practice healthy routines, generally have kids who grow up to do the same. Our children are learning that regular exercise is not only part of our routine, but is fun, exciting and something to look forward to. Another noticeable benefit is the education and stimulation the children receive. While the moms are performing the work out, they count reps with songs and nursery rhymes. We count in other languages, say the days of the week and months of the year, read books and play games to stimulate the babies. After a few classes, many of the older stroller aged children begin to sing along. Even our littlest classmates’ eyes light up when they see their mommy looking silly by singing while doing jumping jacks! Baby Boot Camp really is as much for the benefit of babies as it is for the mothers!”

For those moms with concerns about their weight, Maggie has some great advice. She said, “Learning to love our post baby bodies is something that most new mothers struggle with. I always tell my clients that it takes nine months to gain the weight and women should expect it take at least nine months to lose it. Our postpartum bodies are very different. In order to achieve weight loss goals, I recommend that new mothers start an exercise program, but start slow, preferably 6-8 weeks for newly postpartum moms. When a new mother begins an exercise program it is important that she look for a program, like Baby Boot Camp New Orleans, that offers modifications for the exercises that are more conducive for the postpartum body. By eating lean and clean meats, fruits and vegetables, and easing into routine exercise, weight loss is very possible for moms. In fact many of our clients, myself included, are much more physically fit post baby than we ever were pre-baby!”

Now, when one thinks of New Orleans, fitness is not usually on that list, but Maggie knows it’s quite the perfect city. “A city filled with beautiful parks, countless kid friendly attractions, and locals that do not mind looking silly from time to time has proven to be the perfect match for Baby Boot Camp classes. New Orleans is simply magical, in part from the city itself; the food, the music, the architecture, to name a few attributes, but to me the thing that makes New Orleans truly special are the people who chose to spend their lives there. New Orleanians are a rare breed of people. We are laid back and rowdy at the same time. We hold on to tradition and are proud of our culture in a way that is rarely seen today. I knew I wanted to work with New Orleans parents because New Orleans parents know what a blessing it is to raise their children in such a magical city.”

Baby Boot Camp New Orleans meets at New Orleans City Park on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 9:30am-10:30am and at Audubon Park on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30am-10:30am.
