Yes, New Orleans, what about the hair??? If you know like we know (which of course you do), New Orleans women love to have their hair done! And lucky for them, we have the perfect place. Straight and curly, blond and brunette, bob length and waist length, Ringletts Salon on Paris Ave. is making sure the heads of New Orleans women are healthy and looking good.
Like New Orleans, Ringletts Salon is a multi-cultural hair salon. Mindy Hobley, founder of Ringletts, said, “We really pride ourselves on different people from all different walks of life. New Orleans is such a gumbo of different kinds of people: You may have a dark skinned person with straight hair or you may have a light skinned person with very curly, challenging hair.”
Ringletts Salon first opened in April 2005, six months before you know what. “We opened six months before the storm and in August 2005, we almost drowned. We did drown actually, ten feet of water,” said Mindy. “We were back up in August 2006. With no flood insurance, I had to self-fund, so we started with a very small and affordable shop on Canal Street with just myself and two or three other stylists. And we just grew, and grew, and grew.”
In 2009, with triple the clients she started with, Mindy and her stylists (twelve total!) moved to their current location on Paris Ave. “We’re a very busy salon, servicing over 250 women a week! We embrace who we are, and we accept who we are, and we show you how to be the most beautiful using what you have.”
While Ringletts Salon has been open for the past few years, Mindy has always been interested in the beauty industry. She explained, “I’ve always had very challenging hair, curly and frizzy hair. When I used to be a cheerleader at football games, my hair was a big cotton ball and I was always so embarrassed with my hair. I was always very interested in knowing why my hair acted differently than other people’s hair, and what made it work. I always wanted to know why. So right after high school, I went to beauty school and graduated, and I’ve been doing hair ever since. It’s become my passion. After twenty-three years, I’ve kind of figured out why and how things work. No more frizzies, not if I don’t want them!”
And not only is Mindy manhandling those frizzies, so are her amazing stylists, Tawana Laurent, Tracie Barbre, Jahra Cameron, Lacee Gonzalez, Scherrie Bachemin, Ariel Gallien, Casey Alexander, and Cali LeSassier.
“Oh my gosh, my team. Each one of them has an extreme amount of passion for what they do. When you come to Ringletts, it’s like going to your girlfriend’s place. We want the best for you. We want you to look your best at the event you’re going to. We want you to look your best at your new interview or whatever’s going on with your life. We really care here. We’re not really only a hair business, we’re a people business. And my girls, they’re very strong, always wanting to please and showing care for the client.”
Mindy added, “Getting your hair done should be easy, and simple, and fun. It shouldn’t last all day. You shouldn’t have to go a hair salon in the morning and leave in the evening. So in-and-out is a focus for us. Time is very important to us and our clients and we try to make sure they’re not in the salon all day. We can read your hair. We understand your hair. We relax, color, highlight, cut, Brazilian Blowouts, as well as maintain natural, curly, dry, and frizzy hair. I also have a great stylist who has invented her own method of doing hair extensions and we also offer custom coloring for hair extensions along with twists, braids, and other styles for natural hair. As I said before, Ringletts, we are a multi-cultural salon and we take immense pride in the work that we do.”
Although Ringletts Salon is currently located in Gentilly, Mindy is definitely looking to expand…Uptown, the East, Mid-City (we vote for this one!), Westbank…guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
In the meantime, be sure to make your way to Ringletts and give Mindy and her awesome team a holla. Let the experts dooty you up for a night out on the town or just cuz you feel like it. And be sure to tell them that the ladies of IntheNOLA sent you!
