‘Ole Man’s Spice Rub and Seasoning’ brings new flavor to NOLA kitchens

Written by  IntheNOLA.com
When foreigners think about typical American food, they usually come up with three words: pizza, hot dogs, and hamburgers. And while these are certainly staples of American food, you know us New Orleanians are a little biased when it comes to food. Pizza? Try some jambalaya. Hot dogs? Get you some gumbo. Hamburgers? You know how we love red beans and rice. And etouffee…and fried seafood platters…and muffalettas…and barbecue shrimp…and…

And when people ask us how to describe New Orleans food, it’s hard to do so with words. It’s just a feeling you get when you scoop it up from that big pot your mother cooks in and put that first spoonful in your mouth. Mmmm mmm mm, must be what heaven feels like…

Without a doubt, the spices and seasonings we use in our food certainly set us apart from the rest. You don’t even need to see the crab boil or fish fry to know there’s crawfish or fried seafood when you step into a room. The smell and taste of New Orleans food is enough to make you slap yo’…hush yo’ mouth!

Now, while we’re all familiar with the likes of Zatarain’s and Tony Chachere’s, there’s another seasoning to add to your cabinets, Old Man’s Spice Rub & Seasoning. Described as “sweet, spicy, and versatile,” Ole Man’s Spice Rub & Seasoning will add some diversity to New Orleans kitchens!

Joe Threat, owner and creator of Ole Man’s, comes from a long line of great cooks, including his grandmother, mother, and stepfather, a barbecue and smoke master who passed on his knowledge, traditions, and recipes to Joe. A barbecue and smoke master in his own right, Joe has perfected the Ole Man’s seasoning and is passing all the knowledge he gained from his stepfather. “My stepfather was the one who taught me all the nuances of pit-smoking and slow cooking meat and we called him our Ole Man,” said Joe. “What better way to pay homage to the person I learned all my skills from than to name the company after him.”

But what exactly makes Ole Man’s seasonings different from the others? “Ole Man’s is different because our formulation is a blend of over 20 ingredients from 17 countries around the world,” Joe noted. “You can generously season your food without it being too salty and it creates an unbelievable crust on meat when sprinkled heavily! We currently have two products: the Original blend and Mediterranean blend. The Original blend is sweet and aromatic, with a touch of spice and low salt. It’s very versatile and can be used as a rub or sprinkle for shrimp, crab, or crawfish, as well as on eggs, vegetables, steaks, chicken, venison, etc. The Mediterranean blend is slightly sweet, a little spicy with a touch of citrus, which is great on lamb, fish, vegetables.”

He continued, “Our unique blend puts an unforgettable taste on fish, chicken, pork, or beef that will make a hit for all your meals. This is the only seasoning you need; no additional, salt, pepper, or other spice. Just wash your food product, sprinkle with Ole Man's Spice Rub & Seasoning and enjoy! Our product is available in 5-gallon jars that are perfect for restaurant/commercial cooking, cookouts, and BBQ competitions.”

In addition to online, you can find Ole Man’s Spice Rub & Seasoning at Dorignac’s Food Center (710 Veterans Memorial Blvd.) and Joe will also be along the parade route this year handing out samples of the products!

“It took me twenty years to get our formulation just perfect,” Joe said. “We have sold all over the world, been featured on Etsy.com, Pillsbury’s “We Heart Makers,” and many magazines world-wide. We also sell to several award winning restaurants regularly here in New Orleans and we will also be featured in an artisan gourmet tasting box by a company called The Hatchery soon! We are very excited about being introduced to homes around the country!”

So, if you're looking for something new to spice up your kitchen, try some Ole Man's Spice Rub & Seasoning. In their words, "Sprinkle DAT!" for a fresh, bold, and new flavor!
